Op. 53a Pan och Echo (Pan and Echo), Dance Intermezzo. Completed 1906. First performance in Helsinki, 24th March 1906 (Orchestra of Helsinki Philharmonic Society under Jean Sibelius). Piano arrangement 1907.
Jean Sibelius wrote Pan and Echo in 1906 for a lottery for the benefit of the Helsinki concert hall project. However, the project itself was delayed for decades. The small work in question had the subtitle “Dance Intermezzo number three”, the other two Dance Intermezzos being Cortège and Dance Intermezzo opus 45b. Erik Tawaststjerna described the small piece as “lovable”. Robert Layton was of the same opinion as regards the first half of the piece. However, he thought that the final sequence descended almost to the level of banality.
